Unable to Enable Desktop Floating Pool

$

Hi,

I am working on upgrading to Horizon View 7.2.0.  I have created an "Automated Desktop Pool (Floating Linked Clone)".  When I go to the "STATUS" and use the drop down to "Enable Desktop Pool" I receive the error " [userid] failed to update Desktop [pool name] ".  I looked in the View Connection Logs and found the following error:

2017-06-22T23:31:02.871-04:00 ERROR (0A88-18AC) <pool-11-thread-5> [FaultUtil] InvalidArgument(parameter: desktopSettings.displayProtocolSettings.pcoipDisplaySettings.renderer3D): 3D rendering cannot be enabled when default protocol is RDP and users are not allowed to choose protocol.

In the Pool settings "3D Renderer" is Grayed Out and set to "disabled"

I did not have an issue Enabling the Pool configured like this in Version 6.2.0.

Thanks in advance,

Rick

I need your thoughts on ESXi business continuity

Currently we use ShadowProtect, which works with Oracle's virtual box to do that and it works great, especially for physical machines.  However, I'm looking for something that works with VMware so snapshots can be saved to another location, and that location brought up to a certain point in time if there is a failure or malware, under VMware.  Then they can fire up the other machine to a point of 15 minutes ago or 4 hours ago and continue from there.  With ShadowProtect, if the backups have been altered, it will not replicate them.  The end game is to have a standby environment that cannot be corrupted.  The backups move one way to the backup environment, and are not accepted if they have been altered.  We will then replicate off-site in the local area, which we provide as a service now.

Thanks!

Relationships between Application (deployment) and VM's (VMware Virtual Machine Instance)???

Is there a way to show these relationships in vRA?  Ideally, we'd want all the networks and associated items that come along with the deployment to fall under a parent/child relationship.

Win10 Workstation USB won't work

$

I am trying to get Workstation / Player (tried both, no different) working on a Win 10 Enterprise build 1607 host with the ability to bind USB devices to the guest.  (Ignoring USB devices, everything else works fine).

I am using 12.5.6 - didn't try so much with 12.5.5  but

I've read loads of different posts, and tried loads of things (over and over again) including:

  • uninstall and reinstall
  • uninstall, reboot, remove vmnet* network adapters, uninstall /clean, prevent vmware services from starting, reboot, run the vmware full uninstall steps, remove registry entries, delete files, reboot, reinstall (I knew those old Win95 experiences would come in useful again some day!)
  • repair install, and repair install again

I've got past the failure to install vmusb and hcmon, and the usb arbitration service not starting.

I am now stuck with it simply saying 'the connection for the usb device "xxx" was unsuccessful' with a reason of "driver error".

The logs for the vmware USB arbitration service have this to say:

It is on a laptop so there are loads of different USB devices to play with, and all of them fail the same way.

If I run the arbitration service manually (as listed in the first post below) I see this in the debug output when I try binding a new device:

(Before I tried workstation, I was seeing the arbitrator fail with "error 31 a device attached to the system is not functioning" although all devices were correctly running in device manager - but I can't recreate that situation now).

What to try next?  I've spent many hours to get to this point and still no joy with something that should work out of the box like it has done for many years until now..

(One remaining question - I have vsphere client and client integration plugin installed - do they make a difference here?)

Can the ITSM plugin gather more detail from the vRA VM instance to place into the CMDB?

$

I am being asked to provide more detail into the CMDB from the vRA plugin. I see there are ~90 fields available to the VMware Virtual Machine Instance CI object. I was hoping that more details of the VM would be included beyond the CPU/Mem/Disk information. We really need the FQDN and IP address at a minimum. I would also like to use vRA properties to populate items such as a billing number. I can do most or all of these populations after the VM has been deployed, but would rather use the plugin if possible.

VMware 5.1 VM with large RDM - options to get VM into Vcenter 6.0 system?

$

Hello,

Hopefully this is the right forum.

We have a VMware 5.1 Vcenter system.  We're in the process of migrating the VM's into a Vcenter 6.0 system at another data center (but we're not in charge of the other datacenter so we have to coordinate with another group).

Long story short:

We have one VM with a very large (5 TB) RDM.  Approx.3.3 TB of that disk is in use.  It's comprised of millions and millions of tiny files/directories (like 2kb or less).

The DataCenter folks say they can't import disks with RDM into Vcenter 6.

So our choices:

1)  Copy the data to a VMDK that's presented across the 10 GB data link to the new data center.  However, last time we copied the data (when it was a lot smaller) it took weeks to copy due to the small files (and if it burps along the way either copy dies, or it skips it and you have to pour over log files and manually copy the ones that didn't go or start copy all over again which still takes lots of time).  No our ideal method, if we can help it, since, unfortunately this would require massive downtime.

2)  We are aware that you can convert an RDM to VMDK, but it appears you need at least VMware 5.5 to do this.  Then copy the VMDK to the new data center and import into the 6.0 version.

We would like to do #2, but then that brings up other questions/options:

1)  Datacenter folks said they called VMware and VMware won't support converting RDM to VMDK since we're at version 5.1 and 5.1 isn't supported any longer.  OK, so we could upgrade our vcenter to 5.5/6.0

2)  Then datacenter folks said, "well if you upgrade to 5.5/6.0 it's really super complicated and hard and problematic with SSO".

3)  Then they said, well OK, if you do that, we don't know if the 3.5 TB VMDK file will copy over "well".  I'm not sure what process they are using currently. They have presented a LUN from their SAN (across the 10 GB fibre link) to our Vcenter (so our hosts and their hosts can see it).  I don't know if they're using Converter to get the VMDK and whatnot into their system.  Or if they're manually copying the VMDK (winscp or some other slow process) and then adding to inventory over there.

We were thinking:

Can we install (rather than upgrade, if it's so very very hard) a new Vcenter 5.5/6.0 system on our side (we have the hardware), and move/get the one VM from 5.1 over to our system and that would give us a good idea of how long it takes to do things?

One of our guys had questions:

Q1: can you add a vmx to a different version esxi?

Q2:  can you add a vmx to esxi if it has an rdm? (I'm guessing "no" based upon what the Data Center folks are telling us now, although not sure if that's true/correct or not)

Q3:  will we need to convert to physical rdm (yes, I'm pretty sure this is in the KB article somewhere that if you want to do a "live" convert RDM to VMDK you have to be in physical RDM mode or something)

Q4:  will converting rdm to vmdk take super long?

Q5:  will winscp be reliable for a multi TB vmdk?

Lots of questions, I know, we're just wanting the fastest way to get this done so we don't have a month or more of downtime like we did last time we had to copy the data from one disk to another via OS file copy.  Unfortunately we do not have the abilitiy to do a SAN to SAN copy as we are on a Dell/Compellent SAN and they're on an EMC Vmax or something SAN.

Thanks!

Hi

I installed VMware Workstation Pro 12.5.6 build 5528349 on Windows 7 SP1 64 bit.

In all VMs, when I try to mount a USB stick, the The connection for the USB device 'Kingston USB DISK 2.0' was unsuccessful. Driver error. message is displayed. I also tried to change USB port but nothing changes.

So, how do I fix this?

Thanks

When will VMware release the support to add 10.13 High Sierra as a VM? Currently when creating the VM to add 10.13 for High Sierra, it re-writes the disk to the Apple File System and breaks it.

vSphere Web Client SDK 6.5 error when accessing the web client through local host

I have been working through the documentation for the setup of VMware 6.5 Web Client SDK and am currently trying to get the hello world plug-in working. I finally got the virgo server to start, but when I try to access the web client from local host I get the following error:

This site can’t be reached

localhost unexpectedly closed the connection.

Try:

Checking the connection

Checking the proxy and the firewall

Running Network Diagnostics

ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED

I also received the same error message with the fire wall disabled. I was wondering if anyone could provide some insight into this?

Best,

Eric

Can't Import Certificate running Add Powershell Host Workflow

Running VRO 7.2.

I get this error when running Add Powershell Host Workflow:

[I] Manage SSL certificate called for URL->https://hostname:5986/wsman/

I don't understand why because I can punch that url into my browser and view the certificate under developer settings.

Everything is setup on the powershell host for winrm, the cert is even valid. I just don't understand why this is happening.

So is this something I'm doing wrong? It doesn't seem like it. Did Microsoft push something in a patch? If so, please update your powershell plugin!

I have vCenter 6.5 , ESXi 6.5D and VIO 3.1 and OVA deployment went well, but i can't see plugin in vCenter.

According to the guide i need to go to management server url ( https://ip:8443/VIO) and click fix in order to see Plugin in vCenter. , but i can't login with vCenter credentials.

OMS logs show the following

So it looks like certificate problem , but i haven't changed anything in vCenter.

Is there any option in VIO so i can disable ssl trust check and basically allow connections to hosts with self-signed certificates ?

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,

Lately, our vROPs started throwing errors on 1 of our vDS that has low network capacity remaining (currently 10%).

Here is a screenshot of it:

We can't seem to understand where the "4014.23 MBps" comes from, and why there is only 10% left.

Can you help us please?

What are other doing for profile management in a Horizon 7 Environment?

Hello all,

I'm hoping to get some insight as to what other organizations are doing to manage users profiles.  My company has about 700 users and we currently store most of our profile data on persistent disk.  We do you folder redirection enforced by group policy for things like desktop, document and download folders.  I've heard good things about VMware's EUM (Enterprise User Manager) and also Liquidware Labs Profile Unity.  EUM requires Horizon Enterprise which would also entitle us to other features such as vRealize and App Volumes, which seems very attractive but pricey.

I would welcome your feedback, recommendations and any pros and cons or things I maybe haven't considered!!

Thank you!!

Hi, i am using vRO 7.2 and my workflows work properly in linux to copy a script and execute it using guest script manager, recently we setup a test linux VM, uninstalled VMtools and installed Open VM tools (due to some requirement from netbackup), so after that i notice that the workflow to Copy a file to guest completes in vRO but the sample file is not actually copied to the guest and i don't get any error message. Any idea?
