ESXi 6 - Unable to connect USB Device to VM

$

Hi folks:

I'm having a problem with a particular USB 3 device in trying to connect it to a VM.  The device is a Toshiba USB 3 5tb hard drive, and it's recognized by ESXi as I can see it when I do a lsusb command, but it's never offered as an available choice to connect to any VM.  I've tried restarting all the management agents, rebooting ESXi with the device plugged in so that it's detected immediately at bootup.  I've tried using both the vcenter server appliance web client and the native C client.  It simply never appears as a choice just as if it's not there.  Other USB 3 devices, including a Startech gigabit network device and another 2tb Toshiba USB drive appear as choices, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with USB 3 devices as a whole.  I've connected to other computers and even to an Arch Linux VM under the same ESXi that has a Startech USB 3 controller connected to it via PCI Passthrough and it works in all those places.  I even tried connecting it to a USB 2 port just for the heck of it, and I got the same result (invisible to VMs)  Here is what information I have via the logs.  I see some entries about the device being suspended in the vmkernel log, but I don't know if that's normal procedure for a device until it's assigned to a VM.

Any ideas of what's wrong or how to fix it welcome.

VDP slow, perhaps halted completely?

$

My old VDP installation stopped working, thought I'd start all over with 6.1.1. But it's not working at all.

All hosts have access to a NFS share through a vmkernel. VDP machine runs on NFS share and has got an IP on the same NFS network.

Jobs have halted because of failed snapshots, really messy to clean up snapshots, removing all snapshots over and over until it's finally removed.

Started a new job, halts at "Host is in a state that cannot perform snapshots". Started the same job today and a mccli activity show results in this:

Moving hosts VMs and networking to new vcenter

We are moving from an old vcenter 5.5 server to a new vcenter 6.0 server, same shared storage.

If i export the distributed switch and import it to the new vcenter, would this preserve networking on the vms when i move the host? Or is it better to create a new one with the same vlan ids and names?

Is it possible to do this with zero downtime?

Consigli per dubbi su nuova infrastruttura

$

How to read/follow the Orchestrator API

Hello,

Purely a newbie question for someone who is not a developer/programmer.

How do I follow the API to get the syntax of a command?

E.g. var allPools = cluster.resourcePool.resourcePool_ResourcePool

How would I compile this syntax string by following the API?  Is there any type of beginner guide to how to use the API?  Trying to find the proper syntax is my main issue.

Thanks

Hi Communities , please help me understand .

I have read many KBs but none address my question .

If i have a ESXi host with Optimal/Full 10 GB physical back end , but my eg Windows 2008/12 VMs have e1000 , or e1000e virtual adapters , can my VMs only run at 1 GB , as i can see the nic speed is reported as 1 GB inside Windows ?

I completely understand that E1000 /e family is based on 1 GB Intel actual nics, and VMXnet3 is a Vmware made one 10 GB , and based on what you use , the guest will report that speed , regardless of what is in physically installed in the ESXi host .

But how does this effect actual Guest network throuhput ?

So basically , do i need to exlusively use VMXnet3 to get my full 10GB speed, in and out , when using vpshere 5.5 and distrubuted switches ?

Your inputs would be greatly appreciated .

Unallocating an IPv4Address in Inventory

$

Hi,

To unallocate an IPv4Address in the inventory, we need to set the state to 1 (representing 'unallocated').

However, using LINQPad, I can see that this entitySet has multiple relations to for example the VirtualMachine entitySet (giving the VM's that are/were using this IP).

So when unallocating, I can lookup the IPv4Address entity of the IP address by setting the changed state in the update properties and then do the call to updateVCACEntity(...).

Should I do anything for the updateLinks?? Should I push a vmEntity into it that has value 'null' maybe?

Also, using a call to "vCACEntityManager.readModelEntitiesBySystemQuery", would I be able to read all IPv4Addresses of a certain Network Profile, that are in state == 1?

If I was to query this directly in the SQL database, I could lookup the id of the corresponding network profile and use that in the query on the IPv4Address table, as that contains a FK to the network profile table. However in the object model that relation does not seem to be represented with a property.

Thus far this I solved this by retrieving the network profile entity, then using getLink which gives me *ALL* IP's of that profile and looping through them to find the ones that are for example in state==1. (I can't add a filter to getLink.)

Thanks,

Ed

Cannot delete AppStacks and Writable Volumes from the App Volumes Manager

Whenever I delete an AppStack/Writable from App Volumes, it does not work.  I made sure to detach the volumes first (verified by looking at the hard drive settings of the relevant VMs) to no avail.  Instead of deleted containers, what I get is two errors:

  • in vSphere:  'The operation is not allowed in the current state.'
  • in App Volumes Manager:  "Failed to delete disk '[Store1_Staging_Vol2]cloudvolumes/writable/domain!5C!username.vmdk"'

The workaround I've found is to delete the VMDK in vSphere first from the datastore.  After that, I'm able to delete the objects from the App Volumes Manager without error.

Having to delete twice in two completely separate consoles is a hassle.  How do I fix this?  I'm running vCenter 5.5 (1750787) and App Volumes 2.10.

Thanks!

How to publish your server over the internet

Hi Guys, I have created a application on a VMWare on my machine and it is up and running. I am able to use it when I am at my home on any system (mobile or laptop) so basically its working great on LAN network. I want to use it outside my home also so how can I publish it on a internet. I read it somewhere that if you have a domain and if you point your nameserver location to that you can publish it over the internet. So I have a domain and a good internet connection with static IP so how this configuration works? How can I publish my VMWare machine over the internet. Can anyone point me to the right direction here (any link or documentation which I can use to setup and configure).

VMware ESXi install on HP Proliant DL580 G7 - Issue with boot install via DVD

Hi Everyone,

Trying to load VMware as the OSon an HP Proliant DL580 G7 but never get expected response, like there is an issue booting from the ISO/DVD. Installation is being attempted on site in front of the server via DVD drive. The server attempts to boot from the CD/DVD drive but the install never starts, no output to the monitor, no response from keyboard activity. I’m stumped why and would appreciate help/guidance.

Prior to install attempt the server was up running using ESXi 5.1.0 and accessible via vSphere Client. Along came the need to upgrade the disk drives, increase storage. Removed and noted existing drives with the slot numbers (hardware RAID configured). Inserted new drives, powered up server, configured controller for RAID 50 and verified recognition of new storage space.

Install ISO’s tried are VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.5.0.update02-2068190.x86_64.iso (Normal VMware image build) and VMware-ESXi-5.1.0-799733-HP-5.34.23.iso (Specific for HP DL580). Monitoring the server LED Status lights it boots using DVD drive, reads data from the DVD drive but never get expected output on the directly connected video monitor, install seems to never start

Verification of booting from DVD drive done by using known good RHEL install disk, Also re-inserted original hard drives, verified working as before.

Would appreciate help with this matter!

ESXi 6.0U1a build 3073146 vpxa crashing randomly, host disconnected from vCenter

After recently upgrading vCenter and ESXi to 6.0U1a and installing all patches (now build numbers 3018524 and 3073146 respectively), we began experiencing random host disconnects from vCenter.  The host itself and all guests on it are still alive when it's disconnected; I can SSH to the host and RDP/SSH to guests.  If I literally do nothing, it eventually fixes itself and rejoins vCenter within 15-20 minutes.  We did not have this issue prior to upgrading to 6.0U1a.  This is not the "NETDEV WATCHDOG: vmnic4: transmit timed out" issue.  In fact, the reason we upgraded to the latest build was to get the fix for that particular issue.

I've personally witnessed this happen now on three different hosts and never has it reoccurred on the same host twice that we have noticed.  The vmkernel.log simply shows:

2015-11-18T20:56:42.662Z cpu12:173086)User: 3816: wantCoreDump:vpxa-worker signal:6 exitCode:0 coredump:enabled

The vpxa.log doesn't show anything building up to the disconnection and leaves a large gap after the agent crashes, like so:

vCenter logs simply show the host becoming unreachable so the problem is obviously host-side.

Anyone else seeing similar activity?  This has all the feel of another "known issue" but I don't see any talk about it.  I did open a case with VMware support and am awaiting contact now.

Hi There,

I have installed the Addin and tested in 2 hosts servers successfully then I when to VMWare Horizon 6 View Administrator>Application Pools, removed the current published Excel app then published again to expect to come with the new changes I just had done.

When I run the app from a client machine, the Addin doesn’t come with the app.

I have been looking internet for a possible solution with no luck.

Do you may have an idea on how to do this?

Please let me know if any questions

vSGA and GPU acceleration not working with vSphere 6U1 and Horizon View 6.2

We have Cisco servers with NVIDIA K1 cards in them.

We used to run with vSphere 5.5 and View 6.1.1 - with the vSGA driver. OS is Windows 7, x86. This was working fine. Hardware acceleration of Office programs, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer could be turned on and improved performance.

Now, we run vSphere 6.0U1 and Horizon View 6.2. In this setup, all programs that use GPU acceleration are very slow or unusable. Unchecking 'use hardware acceleration' makes them perform a little better - but of course the graphics is then not offloaded to the K1 cards.

We do not want to use the Grid vGPU drivers because that means we lose vMotion and console access. Also we then have a DR problem because the density decreases: we cannot run all VMs on one host server.

Is anyone successfully using vSGA on vSphere 6 with View 6.2? If so, what could be causing this problem?

App Volumes Datastore staying attached after VM Refresh

Hello,

I'm encountering a strange issue with App Volumes, where the data store where the app stacks lives stays attached to a VM after a user logs out and it is refreshed. We are currently using App Volumes 2.9. Has anyone seen this issue before?

Thanks

Jeff

De-Installing an App and move it to base image

$

Hello,

I was forced to remove an app from an appstack due to compatibility issues and to move it to the base image. Unfortunately I did already delete previous versions of the stack where the app was not present. The problem is that app volumes is masking the application directories on the base image and so I can't see the app.

I tried some exclusions in snapvol.cfg for directories and registry and now I can at least see the exe but I can't start it. Is there a better way to remove an installation form an appstack? I would prefer not to rebuild the whole thing from scratch
