HA reserving percentage of Cluster with different Hardware Configurations

I have bought the e-book Cluster Deepdive, and it is very technical.

 

I may have missed this, or misunderstand it in the book, or it went over my head. But if I am using a Percentage Based HA admission policy, and my hosts are dis-similar. How would calculation be?

An example, though not mine, would be say you have cluster of 4 hosts. 1 Host is 128GB, 1 Host is 256GB, and 2 Host are 512GB. How would you calculate a percentage to reserve? I know if the hosts are all the same it is an N-1 formula. I must have missed this in book.

CloudClient provides a unified command-line interface across vCloud Automation Center (vRealize Automation) APIs. CloudClient versions 1.0 and 2.0 were limited availability feature packs. Starting in version 3.0, CloudClient can be used by anyone who has vCAC.

 

CloudClient 3.0 supports vCAC 6.0 and 6.1.

Windows 8.1 October rollup KB2995388 and issue with Workstation 10

Just installed this update today, noticed after that I could no longer start any VMs with the error of "Not enough physical memory is available", even though 60gb were free and 47gb was allocated available to VMs.  Rebooted, same issue...uninstalled the patch and everything working fine again.

 

Anybody else running a 8.1 host install this yet?

Installing Windows vCenter 5.5 along side a VCSA 5.5 install

I am having a very strange issue that I cannot seem to resolve.

 

Current System:

Running VCSA 5.5

 

Future system

Windows vCenter 5.5

 

Right now I have a environment that is running the vCenter Appliance. Due to growth in the system and the overly priced Oracle suite, it has been decided that we will move to the windows install of vCenter. No matter the version of windows I try to install vCenter on (2008 R2 and 2012 R2) it always fails out at the same point (VMwareVCMSDS failed: AD LDS setup did not complete because one or more LDIF files could not be imported).

 

I am running the install as a Service Account which has full access to the SQL server and is a Domain Administrator.

 

I am starting to believe the issue might be the Fact that I already have a vCenter 5.5 running in the environment, but I cannot confirm. Has anyone else ran into this and found a solution?

VMware Player 6.0.3 - Windows 7 64bit .vmdk Hanging at 'Welcome' Screen

I created a Win 7 64bit virtual machine, e.g. computer.vmdk, in VirtualBox.  I cloned computer.vmdk and renamed it system.vmdk.  I can launch both the original computer.vmdk and system.vmdk in VirtualBox.

 

I copied system.vmdk to a different computer (Win 7 64bit).

 

I created a new virtual machine in VMware Player and after much configuration tweaking I finally got the virtual machine to boot.  I logged in to the virtual machine using a local account and it's been hung on the Welcome screen for about a 1/2 hour.  The wheel is spinning, as if it's still processing, but I can't imagine that it's working properly when it loads instantaneously from within VirtualBox.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm a bit green in the world of virtual systems and I've exhausted Google in trying to find an answer.....  I did find someone else on this board who had the same problem but there was no solution...

Vcenter permissions for guest VM management in Fusion 7 Pro

Hi there,

 

I am trying to set up a user with Fusion 7 Pro so that he can manage a few VMs that are hosted in vCenter/vSphere (v. 5.5). He was not having much luck using the vSphere Web Client on his Mac, particularly for console access so we are going to try Fusion 7 Pro.  He is set up with "VM Power User" permissions in vCenter for the VMs that he needs access to however he is unable to manage them in the Fusion client and he gets a permission denied error. He can't even view the consoles for these machines. I really don't want to give him access to resource management (CPU/Memory/etc). Is there a permission that he specifically  needs in order to manage these VMs using Fusion 7 Pro?

Use Mac Client to deploy Centos VM's

Can someone explain to me how to deploy Centos images, do yum updates on them from a Mac OSX bash shell?

 

I have a VMWare ESXi server with the CENTOS 6.5 ISO in the datastore.

Invoke vCO workflow via PowerShell fails after 5.5.2 upgrade

Hello,

 

After upgrading vCO to 5.5.2 I am having problems executing workflows from PowerShell using REST. I read there are many changes on the vCO REST API on this new version so I am thinking the upgrade has something to do with the problem.

VMware Network Design

Hi,

 

I am setting up VMware with use of 2 network cards going to two separate switches.

 

I have attached a picture of the layout.

 

is there anything i need to be aware of?

 

I can ping the VMware host on 192.168.1.2 from a PC and pull the power on one of the switches and can still ping the host, i can do this for the other switch and all works well.

 

so really just wanting to make sure there is nothing to be aware of which could cause issues.

Is there a possibility to use real time audio video to control a remote desktop (an actual remote desktop rather than a virtual machine on the server)?

 

We need to use two way video with a webcam on a remote desktop .

Will NSX run in nexted ESXi hypervisors for lab purposes

The VCIX-NV blueprint seems to say that you can build a small NSX lab with A box that can run ESXi 5.5 which implies nested ESXi hosts, BUT the NSX POC document says that nested ESXi is not supported. I dont want to start a 60 day 'shot clock' only to find I need more physical servers.

Best Practice Question Setup redudnat management port

     Hi

 

I have a design question regarding managment networks.  Is it possible to setup 2 differnt management networks on an ESXi host with 2 differnt managment port groups, on two different physical switches? 

 

Say a default managemnet network on vSwitch0, using a port group named management network with a VLAN of 10 and and ip addres of 192.168.10.x, using pnics vmnic1 vmnic2

 

Then setup another managment network on dvSwitch1 using a port group management secondary network with a VLAN of 20 and an ip address of 192.168.20.s using pnics vmnic3 active and vmnic4 standby

Also have a port group vMotion on dvSwitch1 with a VLAN of 30 and an ip address of 192.168.30.x using pnics vmnic3 standby and vmnic4 as active?

 

Would the host be able to keep track of the traffic going over both manaement networks?  Would there be any performance or redudnacy benifit to this?  I know that a 2 nic svSwitch at one point was considered a redudnant management port, but have things changed to where best pracitce is to now have 2 managment networks?

observed ip ranges 169.254.x.x

after upgrading from esxi 4,1 to 5.1

 

one of my vswitch is showing in the cdp that observed ip ranges uis 169.254.x.x

 

nothing was changed on the network side.

 

any idea why?

 

vms are also getting 169.254.x.x as well

 

the security policy is set to

 

reject promiscous mode

reject mac address changes

reject forged transmits

vlans unreachable problem

Hi all,

 

I have an IBM Blade Chassis H with 2 BNT Layer 2/3 Copper Gigabit Ethernet Switch Modules firmware 5.3.0.5. Each switch is connected to one upstream switch using two trunks with two external ports. Each trunk is tagged with two different vlans (100 and 200). Blade servers are running ESXi 5.1. Internal ports are vlan tagged, pvid is 100 and tagging-pvid is disabled. Each blade is configured with one standard switch that has Management network. This standard switch is connected to vmnic0 and vmnic1.


The problem is that vmnic0 and vmnic1 don´t detect networks other than management. I am trying to use the two gigabit ethernet switches for iSCSI traffic but when I add a new vkernel with iscsi vlan tagged I can´t reach the network even though is connected and can be pinged from the switches. The kernels are connected following documentation, two vkernels with one vmnic available and the other disabled.

vCenter 5.1 re-add hosts fail

Hi all,

 

Ok....for whatever reason today all hell broke loose on my VMWare Cluster.

vCenter 5.1

3 Hosts connected, at least they were on Friday (HP Gen8 DL380p, 2 x Xeon, 128Gb Mem)

 

Today I come in and low and behold, two of three hosts are no longer connected.

 

Follow a few KB articles. One says to log in locally to Host,

remove vpxuser:Done.

Restart MGMT agents:Done

Re add host back into venter.

 

Fail fail fail.

Error is: Failed to configure the VIM account on host.

Submit Error Report link on same error popup takes me to the KB 2004667, which tells me to do exactly what I just did. This still fails.

Cannot "putty" in..."Server unexpectedly closed network connection" I assume this is because there is no longer a vpxuser account????

 

I have VM's running on this host that I CANNOT......lets reiterate....that I CANNOT SHUT DOWN.

 

We run 24/7/365 and I do not have the luxury of stopping and starting VM's at will. I cannot reboot this Host...unless I can vmotion these VM's off, which is not an option because of these 2 Hosts NOT being in the cluster anymore.

 

Going back into the console to look at logs. pressing numeric keys for log files....does nothing, screen flashes thats about it.

 

So I am hooped.

 

On the second host, I have not yet removed the vpxuser account, so when I try an add this Host back into the Cluster I get this error: (Image attached)

But is still has the VIM account issue.

 

Why or how can this happen??

 

Any assistance would be grateful.

If I see check disk usage performance for one production VMs it show the below

 

Latest 67640 KBps

Max : 798919 KBps

 

just want to know how do I convert above value in mbps

HostStorageSystem comes back undefined

I am trying to get the naaIDs from the host so I can match them to the lun that the VM has.  On vCO 5.5.1 it can get to the storageDeviceInfo but in 5.1 it comes back as undefined as stroageSystem is there some configuration that you need to set in the VC?

Known issues with ESXi 5.1 and Read-Only Domain Controllers?

We have a several ESXi hosts running 5.1 (free version) in different sites and are experiencing a strange issue with two of them

 

We can join the hosts to Active Directory and add domain users and groups to the permissions as soon as the join is done.

 

However, within an hour AD authentication stops working.  When we try to add more domain users/groups we get the error

Error:A general system error occurred: Error accessing directory: Can't bind to LDAP server for domain: XXXXX

 

Call "UserDirectory.RetrieveUserGroups" for object "ha-user-directory" on ESXi "xxxxx-xxxxx" failed.

 

Now, the only hosts that experience this issue are the ones that are in sites that have a read-only domain controller.  I can't believe this is a coincidence so I'm wondering if there is a known issue or if anyone can explain why this would happen?

 

We are not using VCenter or SSO for these hosts.

vCenter - Change Disk Mode to Dependent

Hi,

 

We have a virtualized vCenter Server at a site and it has 'Independent - Persistent' disks set.

I would like to change this to Dependent, so we can snapshot the VM.

 

Usually I would shutdown the VM, cannot to the host via Desktop Client and change the mode however the VM version is 10 so I am unable to do this.

And because this is the vCenter server, when it is powered off I can't access vCenter.

 

Does anyone know how to change the disk mode using another method?

VMotion on ESXi 5.5

Hi,

I am trying to configure VMotion on 2 ESXi 5.5 hosts:

IBM HS23 with Intel Xeon E5-2650 @2.00 GHz

And

IBM HS22V with Intel Xeon E5649 @ 2.53 GHz

But I can’t. I have try to configure EVC for these two processors but again no result.

Can anyone give me some ideas
