Moving SAN BOOT Volume from one storage to another

$

Hello,

We are planning to replace our netapp FAS6200 to new one FAS6200 storage (same model but bigger capacity). Question is our Vmware host bootvolume is kept on the old Storage, and that will also get moved or migrated to the new storage server.

Netapp suggested to use Vol move command for all the luns and Datastore cluster. As they said it will not affect anything on our production host and it does not required any down time. is anybody has done this kind of migration ?

what precaution we should take or any problem we may see during this activity ?

Thanks in advance.

PXE Fails TFTP Download

Hello, we are having an issue with PXE booting in VMware using a large than 1432 RamDiskTFTPBlockSize.  We have tried using the following settings for the block size: 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384 and they all fail with error code 0xC0000001.  When using the E1000 NIC, the info on the error states: "A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed".  When using VMXNet3, the info on the error states "File: \Windows\System32\boot\winload.efi; Info: The application or operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains error".  This specific test was done with UFEFI, but we get the same results when using BIOS (just always get the first error, not the winload.efi).

We need to increase the TFTP Block Size because some of our other NICs can't perform adequately with the default setting and require an increased block size (and many other systems get a benefit from it as well).  We are using System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2 as our PXE server (running on Windows Server 2008 R2, but we have also tried Windows Server 2012 R2 with the same result).

I found a similar thread, not sure if any relation: https://communities.vmware.com/thread/461323?z=TvieFa

Any thoughts?  Thanks!

Problems with EVC

Hello,

i have some problems with EVC which i do not understand. I recently have added a new IBM System X 3650 M4 server with Intel Xeon E5-2650 v2 Cpu's. The other 2 Servers are an IBM Server with Intel Xeon E5540 Cpu's and a Dell server with E5430 CPUs. Now when i add the new machine to the cluster and enable EVC it will do so and confirms that EVC is running in Intel® "Penryn" Generation (Xeon® 45nm Core™2) as this is the first one that works for all 3.

The problem which now occurs is that i can migrate a machine to the new host but not back. When i try to migrate a running machine back it always says that the Host CPU is not compatible and that the following functions differ: PCLMULQDQ, SSE4.2, AES-NI and that i should use a Cluster with enabled EVC. But i have EVC enabled for this cluster. How can i resolve this issue, anyone got an idea?

Thx in advance

V2V sharepoint 2013 and SQL2012 Lab test environment

$

Hi All Can someone please tell me if this is possible and what I did wrong? The scenario:  used VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client to copy V2V sharepoint 2013 and SQL2012 servers from our production environment over to our Exsi Lab test environment, totally separate from production network.  The reason for this is to experiment with sharepoint 2013. But when we access the test lab sharepoint2013 we receive the following error “the operation can be performed only on a computer that is joined to a server form buy users who have permissions in SQL server to read from the configuration database? Do I need to copy the DC over to get this to work? Is there any dangers in copying a DC over to the test lab?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated Thanks

lots bridged network between Workstation and VmPlayer

$

Hello all,

I created a virtual machine with Workstation 10. I have 1 ethernet slot in motherboard and 3 additionnal Ethernet single board.

With application Editor virtual network i created

  • vmnet 0 bridge to the Ethernet mother board (Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I217-LM)
  • vmnet 2 bridge to 1 additionnal Ethernet board (Intel(R) Ethernet I210-T1 Gbe NIC)
  • vmnet 3 bridge to the second additionnal Ethernet board (Intel(R) Ethernet I210-T1 Gbe NIC #2)
  • vmnet 4 bridge to the second additionnal Ethernet board (Intel(R) Ethernet I210-T1 Gbe NIC #3)

after in VM -> setting, I create each Network Adapter for the VM

  • Network Adapter with custom Vmnet 0 (Bridged)
  • Network Adapter#2 with custom Vmnet 2 (Bridged)
  • Network Adapter#3 with custom Vmnet 3 (Bridged)
  • Network Adapter#4 with custom Vmnet 4 (Bridged)

when the VM is started i configure each network adapter with @IP address

the first point i have some difficulties to find the good slot HW behind the PC to connect the good cable on this slot. Only for additional Ethernet board.

I supposed that the first Ethernet Adapter behind was called AMD PCNet Adapter#2 but it's not the same order that previously in virtual network Editor.

Do you know how to do the good correlation?

After i uninstall Workstation and install VM PLayer.

I try to run this VM under VM Player. All is fine excepted the Ethernet board.

with the same place of cables, same configuration IP nothing is running.

Inside VM Player i saw that i lost the Bridged for Ethernet Board...

so inside VM player i tried to configure by setting each Network Adapter to a specific board directly but the previous configuration IP is not on the good AMD PCNet Adapter after. And i can not reconfigure it because after i have @IP conflict under windows.

How i can keep my bridged Network between migration Workstation and VM Player, please?

Thank you so much for your help.

Agnès

vCAC vCO plugin -- get vCACCAFECsResourceType for internal "IaaS VC VirtualMachine" resource type in workflow?

$

Hi -

I'm in vCO using the 6.0.1 vCO Plug-in for vCAC, trying to create a vCAC ADS resource action to run against a VC:VirtualMachine. When I manually register my action workflow in the vCAC UI, it finds the VC:VirtualMachine input parameter and maps it to an "IaaS VC VirtualMachine" resource type, and the action shows and runs correctly against VMs selected in the vCAC UI Items.

Now, in a workflow to create the resource action, I'm trying to use createResourceActionFromWorkflow() from the com.vmware.library.vcaccafe.asd.resourceaction package, which requires a vCACCAFECsResourceType (i.e. VCACCAFE:CustomResource) object. I want to point to the same "Infrastructure.Virtual" resource type which the vCAC UI uses, but I can't seem to find it in a safe fashion.

If I get a previously created VCACCAFE:ResourceAction and look at its getInputParameter().getResourceType() in a workflow, I can see an object that looks like:

[2014-08-11 16:14:50.094] [I] type.id=eaba1f37-6154-4c17-94ae-ea419cb9e14e

[2014-08-11 16:14:50.095] [I] type.name=IaaS VC VirtualMachine

[2014-08-11 16:14:50.095] [I] type.externalTypeId=Infrastructure.Virtual

[2014-08-11 16:14:50.095] [I] type.vcoType=VC:VirtualMachine

[2014-08-11 16:14:50.095] [I] type.vcoId=null

[2014-08-11 16:14:50.095] [I] type.providerId=asd.external

[2014-08-11 16:14:50.096] [I] type.tenantId=_internal

and if I do a new vCACCAFECsResourceType() and set the values (especially the id) in that object manually and use that in createResourceActionFromWorkflow(), it works. But, it doesn't feel safe to hard-code the type.id in my workflow -- will that work on other vCAC installs?

Also, I have been to get the corresponding vCACCAFEResourceType via:

vCACCAFEHost.createAdvancedDesignerClient().getAdvancedDesignerCsResourceTypeService().getResourceType('_internal', 'Infrastructure.Virtual');

but that's a different object class and I can't see how to get the corresponding vCACCAFECsResourceType.

I also tried doing a com.vmware.library.vcaccafe.asd.customresources.createCustomResourceFromInventoryType() for 'VC:VirtualMachine' and then using that vCACCAFECsResourceType to create the resource action. It creates and publishes just fine, but the action never shows in the vCAC UI (using the same entitlement as when using Infrastructure.Virtual).

Any ideas? Thanks,

Greg

After upgrading to Mavericks, I am failing to get horizon view client 3.0 to use a single monitor in full screen. I have tried unsetting and resetting "Displays have separate Spaces" in Mission Control settings, to no avail. When I assign the client window to a single desktop, and then go full screen, it crashes.

ddb.virtualHWversion in VMDK descriptor file

$

Can anyone shed some light on theddb.virtualHWversion field within a VMs vmdk file ?

I assumed it define the version of the virtual hardware and would match the version defined in the VMX file. However -  if I create a VM at HW version 7,then both the version field in the VMX and the version in the VMDK are both set to 7. (good).

I then upgrade the hardware to version 10 but only the contents of the VMX file gets updated and the entry in the VMDK remains at 7.  Is this an issue ?

Backing Up and Restoring vCenter Server in a LAB?

$

Hello,

I need to take a copy of our production vCenter and run it in a lab for testing purposes.

How do I go about this and is there any official documentation pertaining to backing up and restoring vCenter 5.5?

I also plan on using this process as my disaster recovery process if anything bad were to happen.

From my limited experience, do all I need to do is backup the SQL database and SSL certificates? How do I restore this in the Lab.

My vCenter 5.5 is on Server 2008R2 with a separate SQL 2008R2 server.

Regards

Jason

vm ware base image that can be reused over and over again with out any issues.

hello this is a good one, I built up an image on workstation 10. Its a win server 08 r2sp1. Its my base vm it has all the windows updates etc. I left it as a workgroup turned it off and copied it to my backup storage. I used it the other day no errors on boot up, joined it to a domain, I can manage it from domain controller but when I try to add a domain account I get a icon that has a question mark then S-1-5-21-1889911294-3107847624-4050080790-1108 (which is a microsoft security identifier) when I add it, it does not show. I think there is settings that are sticking with the base vm although it has not joined the domain. Basically how can I make a base vm that I can use over and over againthat will be like a brand new vm built up from scratch. Is there something I can do with my current base image to make it work with out that sid issue.

Hello,

I'm using Horizon with View 5.3.1 in vSphere 5.5.

We are in a test phase for a Win7 linked clone pool. After recompositioning a guest it looses its OS. It stays in a boot loop telling me that the OS can't be found.

Any advice?

migrating from one physical data center to another (across the wire)

$

we have a couple of thousand vms that over the next few years need to be moved from datacenterA to datacenterB. We have a good pipe between both datacenters which are X miles from each other, but in the end we would have to come up with some creative solutions.

Once the vm's are powered off , the whole migration can take place. The vm's will not be powered back on until they are placed on to their final resting place datastore.... but this is what I am thinking about.

I was thinking of using a NAS based transitional datastore, initially mounted on the source cluster, moving the vms to the transitional datastore than mounting the transitional datastore on the target cluster where we are migrating to, then move the vms to their final resting place datastore...

Is this a feasible option?

if not, im all ears on recomendations how to actually move vms in mass quantity....

thanks

View Licensing - Mixed environment

Is it possible to run a View 6.0 environment with a Standard and Enterprise key?  From what I can see you can only enter 1 key.

We're interested in using a standard license for a majority of our users and then utilize an Enterprise License for a smaller subset of users for RDS access.
